...A co-operative relationship is clearly the most beneficial to BT. If the employer and the employee both share the same relationship they may perhaps share the same goals, then this will go on to cement a good working relationship which will benefit both the staff and BT as a whole. At the moment, it would perhaps be apparent that a coercive if not calculative relationship existed between the employer and employees. Most people only have so much energy they can invest in the pursuit of satisfying their needs. The process theory therefore must be the link between the expenditure of energy in an activity and the actual satisfaction. The reward must also be proportionate to the effort that has been exerted to gain it. The managers should take this into account and consider what constitutes a worthy reward for employees that meet and exceed certain standards. This can act as a motivator. BT should have included the above in their total quality management scheme. Motivational Theories BT could have used motivational theories to ensure the initial program might have been more successful. If they had implemented something based along Maslows Hierarchy of needs (Maslow 1954) then it might have been a very different situation. Maslow's hierarchy of needs demonstrates that individuals need to satisfy basic needs before they can progress to the next stage in the hierarchy. With each stage completely satisfied you can progress further up the hierarchy until the person or employee achieves self-actualization. Basic needs consist of satisfying hunger, thirst, warmth and shelter. Safety needs are that the job you are in is secure and you are not likely to be made redundant soon after starting. Belonging is where employees feel part of the company and wanted both by colleagues and the employer. Self-esteem is where the employee is concerned with how others within the company see them and value them and when this stage is satisfied the employee can realize that they have achieved self actualization, the realization and use of full potential. Not everyone in their working life achieves all of the stages, and it is possible to move up and down the hierarchy throughout a person's career. Company such as BT can help an employee achieve their basic physiological needs by paying them a fair amount and offering them relative job security...
